Impett announced as new Event Director for World Triathlon Championship Series Leeds

Lindsay Impett has been appointed as Event Director as plans develop ahead of Britain’s highest profile triathlon event, which takes place in Roundhay Park on 11 and 12 June 2022.

Impett, whose background includes roles at the 2019 Vitality Netball World Cup and London 2012 among a range of roles at sporting events, is the first female Event Director to take on the role and is taking over from Wayne Coyle who has overseen the event since 2017.

Speaking about her appointment, Impett said: “I’ve always had a passion for triathlon as a spectator. I love that competitors have different strengths across swim, bike, run which means the race lead is continually changing and this makes it a great sport to watch.

“In my career I have worked on events across over 25 different sports but never triathlon, so I was excited to get the opportunity to take on this role and work with such a dynamic sport in a fantastic city.”

Renowned as a gender equal sport since its inception, triathlon’s status in this area was showcased through the mixed relay in Tokyo last year in which Jess Learmonth, Jonny Brownlee, Georgia Taylor-Brown and Alex Yee won gold for Team GB.

As the first female lead of Britain’s flagship triathlon event, Impett joins a number of other women leading World Triathlon Championship Series races internationally.

She also joins the sport at an exciting time in Britain, as this year’s event will see a change in schedule. With paratriathlon racing taking place at a standalone World Triathlon Para Series race in Swansea, Leeds will host mixed relay and sprint distance triathlon for the first time.

“World Triathlon Championship Series Leeds 2022 includes a mixed relay for the first time and I am looking forward to seeing all the teams compete against the British team as the reigning Olympic champions,” Impett continued.

“But what is really special about this event is the participation element, where triathletes of all levels and experience can compete on the same course as the elite across a variety of distances.”

Speaking about Impett joining the event, British Triathlon CEO, Andy Salmon, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Lindsay to the Leeds team.

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to Wayne for the dedication and leadership he’s shown to the event over the years. He’s provided Lindsay with a great platform from which to take on the event.

“The experience Lindsay brings from working at events in the UK and around the world will be a real asset to us and I’m excited to see how it continues to grow.”

Impett is keen to make the weekend an opportunity for everyone to engage with swim, bike, run through taking part in one of the races, volunteering or spectating.

“This event will be a real festival of triathlon,” she added. “Not only will you see elite athletes competing twice across the weekend, but thousands of individuals will take part across the event.

“Beyond the actual swim, bike, run, there will be entertainment, catering and cultural performances that will make this a really fun day out for all the family. Roundhay Park is a great place to be and we hope to see you there on 11 and 12 June.”

As well as Impett, the event has welcomed two new additions to its oversight board to help provide support and direction to the event.

Tracy Power and Clive Richards will work alongside the current board members to ensure that the benefits of participation in swim, bike, run are felt as widely as possible, as well as guiding on the opportunity to host the top triathletes from around the world.
